Veefer, or VFR represents the next wave of graffiti artists to emerge in the mid-Eighties. The rules of the game were set in place by the elders (a system of iconography as rigid stylistically as Egyptian hieroglyphs), and then Transit was cleaning trains as quickly as the “vandals” could paint them, so many of the second-generation graffitists opted for quantity over quality, signing their names everywhere with homemade magic markers rather than taking time to paint an elaborate “piece”. The object was to get one’s name up in as many spots as possible, and the ultimate aim was to go all-city (have signatures prevalent in all five boroughs). Few would contest that VFR was one of the few writers to achieve all-city status, and certainly the most stylish.

VFR has signed ANYTHING across the front of a tee-shirt in his infamous hand. Unlike most logo shirts it is hard to decipher for those uninitiated in the mysteries of this peculiar inner-city calligraphy; but then it would be a crime to ask him to clean it up, and rob it of everything that’s genuine. Furthermore, the copious drips further obscure the letters. Unlike the early writers for whom “paint control” was a virtue, taggers in ink reveled in the drip, considering it a punk attribute and a display of wealth.
